Medications for Children & Adolescents

More and more youth are being treated with psychiatric medications. They are often used alone or in conjunction with psychotherapy. Although medications can be an effective treatment choice, parents often have many questions regarding their necessity, safety and effectiveness. There are number of different types of medications prescribed to children and adolescents. Common types include: Stimulants (e.g., Ritalin, Concerta, Adderall), Antidepressants (e.g., Prozac, Lexapro, Tofranil), Antipsychotics (e.g., Seroqel, Thorazine, Zyprexa), and Anti-anxiety medications (e.g., Ativan, Xanax).
